Nature Pack Class
An on-the-go class that changes location each week, nature pack students will explore the world around them through all their senses while learning about nature and bugs each week in all seasons! Activities and conversations are developmentally appropriate for each age group. The pack of children, led by Ryan, will venture out in morning and afternoon classes for groups that range from 3 to 11 year olds (classes are broken up by ages). This drop-off class takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from August through June.
Puddle Jumpers
Ryan is the lead teacher at Puddle Jumpers, a program for preschoolers that mixes outdoor exploration with fundamental learning through hands-on experiences at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center! This is a 3-hour drop-off program that is offered morning or afternoon on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 3 to 5 year olds. Registration is through Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.
Marsh-ology: The Science of One Wetland
Ryan is leading a homeschooling series at Millbrook Marsh. Start your week with science! Each Monday, we will explore a new topic, from animal flight to the weirdness of water. Get hands-on with experiments, demonstrations, and science-based games. Each week is different; sign up for them all!
This program is for 8 to 15-year-olds. Registration is through Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.
General Entomology (online)
Students ages 12-18 will be taught general entomology with introductions in the intermediate levels. This class will go deeper than the standard curriculum with the hopes of teaching the next generation of entomologists. This class will begin with basics in physiology, anatomy, identification, behavior, and ecology, but teaching will evolve with the interests of the students towards potential topics, from proper insect collecting and labeling to conducting backyard ecological experiments.
Entomology in a typical classroom tends to be focused on anatomy, but the field of entomology is vast and has a spotlight in nearly every discipline. This class will be taught with that in mind-- that entomology can involve whatever you'd like and Ryan is ready to teach you what you want to learn. Registration is through Outschool.
What's That? - Insects Hidden in Plain Sight (online)
From a hole in the wall to a ball on a plant, insects are never far away...even if you don't notice.
This class is about all the things you may have missed... It will also be an opportunity to ask lingering questions about any insect you've encountered in your life. Classes will not be focused on the basics of insect behavior and biology, but rather an exploration of the range of behaviors and the unseen impacts that they make on our lives. Students are encouraged to bring any physical examples they may have collected or things that they've seen. This question-based class for ages 5-11 will focus on bridging gaps between insects and our everyday lives and inspire insect exploration! Registration is through Outschool.
Individual or Group Lessons and Outreach or Workshops (in-person or online)
Lessons or outreach presentations for entomology, specialty projects, or other interdisciplinary interests that connect to bugs can be scheduled directly with Ryan! He has taught many students one-on-one or in small groups to help expand their bug knowledge and relate it to the world around them. He also uses bugs and their stories to help build developmental skills, supervises students working on experiments and research, and more! Have a question? Please reach out!
